Preventing and Managing Burnout in the Healthcare Industry

The healthcare industry is one of the most demanding, challenging, and rewarding industries in the world. It can be incredibly fulfilling to help people when they are at their lowest, but it can also be extremely taxing on your mental and physical health. Burnout is a very real phenomenon in the healthcare industry, and if you don't take steps to prevent it, you may find yourself feeling depressed, exhausted, and even mentally and physically unhealthy.  We wrote this blog post in hopes that it will help you stay well and stay healthy because we are in a world that desperately needs you!

As a nurse or healthcare provider, you are on the front lines of patient care. You see firsthand the effects of stress and burnout on both your patients and your colleagues. You may feel like you don't have time for self-care, but it is essential to find ways to recharge, both physically and emotionally. Taking care of yourself will help you be more effective in your work, and it will also prevent burnout. There are many simple self-care strategies that can make a big difference. Taking a few minutes each day to meditate or take a nature walk can help reduce stress levels. Taking time for yourself doesn't have to be time-consuming or expensive. Even small changes can make a big difference in how you feel. When you take care of yourself, you are better able to take care of others.

Recently, Prepare To Act began a new mission called Scrubs & Beyond. The concept was born when we were presenting at a healthcare conference and the subject of loss came about. Chris Marciano, our Founder, noticed some in attendance began to well up and cry. The stress of the healthcare profession is overwhelming, then the universe doubled down and added covid. It set our foundation on a task to be a resource and offer support to those that keep us all healthy.

What Are The Signs Of Burnout?

It's no secret that burnout is real. We've all been there, at our wit's end, wondering how we'll make it to the end of the day/week/project/etc. The key to knowing how to deal with burnout is recognizing the signs before it's too late.

Signs of burnout include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed or hopeless

  • Losing interest in what you're doing

  • Detachment from your work or goals

  • Increased irritability or cynicism

  • Decreased productivity

  • Changes in sleeping or eating habits

  • Unexplained aches and pains

  • Getting sick more often than usual

Identify What Stresses You Out

If you find yourself experiencing any of these symptoms on a regular basis, it's time to take a step back and reassess your situation. Find ways to reduce stress in your life by setting boundaries, scheduling time for yourself, and saying no when you need to. Implementing self-care strategies can help you avoid burnout and thrive both professionally and personally.

When you're constantly surrounded by stress, it can take a toll on your mental and physical health. That's why it's so important to identify what's causing your stress and to find ways to manage it. There are many different strategies for self-care that can help you thrive despite the challenges you face. Here are just a few of the things you can do to prevent burnout:

A Few Quick Tips!

Get enough sleep: When you're tired, everything feels more difficult. Be sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help you feel your best.

Eat healthily: A nutritious diet will help your body cope with stress better. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain

Exercise: Physical activity releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. Taking some time out for a brisk walk or an aerobics class can make a big difference in how you feel.

By taking care of yourself, you'll be better able to handle the stresses of the healthcare field. These simple self-care strategies can make a big difference in your overall well-being.

Practice Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness can help nurses to remain calm, cool, and collected in the face of adversity. Mindfulness enables you to be fully present in the moment, without getting caught up in your thoughts or emotions. This allows you to focus on what is happening right now, which is critical when seconds matter. In addition, mindfulness can help to reduce stress and anxiety, both of which can interfere with clear thinking and decision-making. For nurses, being able to stay calm and focused in the face of difficulty is essential. By practicing mindfulness, they can better ensure that they are able to provide the best possible care for their patients.

Set Boundaries!

It's so important to set boundaries and practice self-care.  Burnout doesn't just happen overnight; it builds up over time as we push ourselves harder and harder. By taking some time for us to recharge, we can avoid reaching the point of burnout. There are a variety of different ways to do this, from taking a few minutes each day to disconnect from work to take a vacation when possible. Implementing some self-care strategies can make a world of difference in our ability to thrive in the healthcare field.  It is absolutely imperative to unplug, disengage, and concentrate on non-work activities while you're not working.  Learn to "say no" to ‘extras like taking on more responsibilities, covering too many coworkers' shifts, or taking part in research initiatives will also keep you calmer.

Compartmentalize!

Compartmentalization is a critical skill for professionals in any high-pressure industry — including nurses. By compartmentalizing, nurses are able to set aside their personal feelings and focus on providing quality patient care. This can be a difficult skill to master, but it’s essential for maintaining professionalism and preventing burnout. When nurses are able to compartmentalize, they’re better able to cope with the demands of the job and provide the best possible care for their patients.
