Helping Seniors

Secure-A-Senior Program

According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey, there were 2,923,430 household burglaries in 2010. Only 40% of property crimes were reported to the police.

Prepare to Act has developed the Secure-A-Senior Program in order to provide a safe and secure home environment for seniors. In order to achieve this, a free review of home safety issues will be performed as well as a complete security overhaul.

Issues addressed in the review of home safety issues will include:

- Evaluation of weaknesses in the security of the home
- Review of the security of all entry points to the residence
- Check of door and window locks
- Clearing and trimming of brush near the residence where people can hide
- Installation of ample lighting

The Secure-A-Senior program is open to low-to-moderate income Watertown/Oakville seniors age 60 or older who  are physically or financially unable to secure their homes.

Seniors can sign up for the October 31st drawing from October 1 to October 29 during the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Falls Avenue Senior Center, 311 Falls Avenue, Oakville.

Applicants should bring a driver’s license or other proof of residency and age when applying. Each applicant will be assigned a number which will be selected from a drawing on October 31. The homeowner will then be contacted to schedule a date and time for the initial home safety evaluation.

Local businesses and community members are encouraged to donate supplies, funds or their time to the Secure-A-Senior program.
